Well, this one hit stores today and I'd been anxiously awaiting it for some time being a huge Gin Blossoms fan. First, the content. Presenting the original 12 song album on disc one and 22-tracks of demo/live/rare recordings on disc 2 makes for a comprehensive release.

The 2nd disc selection is damn near perfect pulling tracks from out-of-print EPs, B-sides, unreleased tracks from the album sessions and the live material released as b-sides through their career. The only track absent is 'Christine Sixteen' from the KISS tribute album, but that may be due to licensing issues. There's a few very unreleased tracks like 'Standing in the Wheat' and 'What' that didn't make it, but I'm not even sure if those were ever laid down in the studio. Second, the sound. The liner notes indicate the album tracks were 24/96 mastered from the original 1/2' master tapes.

That's fine and good, but comparing to the original release, the new one is much louder and more compressed sounding. I have many of the tracks from the 2nd disc on official releases, but haven't had time to A/B them. Teri hai zameen tera aasman instrumental. Third, album packaging. The new release includes all original art, photos and lyrics although laid out in a different manner.

There's also pics of various concert tshirts that show off the bands sense of humour. Liner notes are rather vague, but do indicate that the L/R channels were reversed from the original release to represent the band's/producers intent. Did anybody who picked this up have Cool Edit or some software that will let you look at the compression or sonics on this new release vs. The original? Or, is Cool Edit available for a sample download?

OK, I tried the level matching with the MiniDisc deck. I fed it a digital out form the CD player. I watched the track 'Angels Tonight' from disc 2. I have the original EP release I thought it sounded good. The new release sounded compressed to me. Sure enough, the 'new' version maxed out the meters (definitely louder) and during the chorus, the meters were solid and pegged at '00'.

Same part in the original release yielded sound at least 2db lower and no pegging solid meters during the chorus. Sure signs of compression? Mike, yes you are correct. MD meters simply tell you what you are going to hear, sort of.

They won't give you particulars of what was done, but they will tell you differences in level and dynamics between the two discs. Showing 'how' they mangled the sound is sort of secondary, to me anyway. The damage is already done. I figure that a master tape has a particular level. The original CD should be indicative of that level since there would be no reason to lower the level, since CD has very wide dynamic range capability.

Raising that overall level for 'effect' is a loudness button equivalent. That's why I like analog recording, where you can sneak transients and dynamics into the red and actually improve the sound.

That was my reaction, too. I could tell it was compressed, but I wasn't expecting anything like that. Maybe somebody else could do a check, to make sure I didn't do something wrong (though I can't imagine what I could have messed up). Ryan PS - Of course, the other side of the coin is the Q magazine version doesn't seem loud *enough.* Obviously, it's the superior of the two in that it still has dynamic range, but it looks like there's a couple of bits of resolution going to waste there since it never peaks much above 60-70%.

He's done some Who work, including the 1993 single-CD Tommy and the recent My Generation Deluxe Edition. MG-DE sounds really good, open and dynamic to me (many have issues with the mix, but of course that's a different animal), but I haven't checked it on the PC. I think Luke (our resident Who sage) likes the 1993 Tommy. I've never heard it. I *think* (don't have them in front of me) that he also did the Joe Jackson remasters of I'm The Man and Look Sharp. They sound compressed to me compared to the originals (albeit clearer with wider frequency response), but again I haven't loaded them up on the computer.

(The Jackson reissues also have the track indexing goofed up -- the song starts a half-second or so before the index point -- but I don't know if that's Labson's fault or not.) Ryan. Didn't know until reading this thread that this was part of the Deluxe Edition series. And had it in my hands this afternoon, but just couldn't justify the $29.99 price since I'm buying primarily for the second disc.

And what's the point of including so many tracks from the two EPs? 'Up and Crumbling' is still pretty widely available, and from what I understand the long-lost 'Dusted' has finally been issued on CD. I mean, I'll probably still buy this at some point, but it looks like Universal dropped the ball a little bit on song selection, not to mention the apparently ham-fisted remastering.
